How do you respond when someone asks, “how are you?” Do you answer honestly regardless of how you are feeling? If are you like most people, there are probably times when you don’t.
All of us deal with stress, sadness, and loss in our lives, so why is it sometimes hard to talk about it? Because we know that there is a good chance that we will be judged and discriminated against when we do. The Mental Health Commission of Canada found that 2 out of 3 people keep their stress to themselves to avoid being rejected or judged.
This week, consider challenging yourself to talk to someone about how you really feel when they ask how you are. By doing so, you can join those of us who are working to change how we all deal with mental health. Let’s stop thinking about people facing mental health challenges as ‘them’ or ‘those people’. They are us and we are them.
